UNICEF report exposes 400M children denied basic services in 2025
A new UNICEF report reveals that more than 400 million children in low- and middle-income countries lack access to at least two essential services. Released on Universal Children’s Day 2022, the study highlights deep inequalities affecting the most vulnerable. The findings also recognise India’s progress in reducing child poverty through targeted policies.
The State of the World’s Children 2025 report, authored by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, underscores severe deprivations among children worldwide. Those under five, children with disabilities, and those living in conflict zones or climate-hit regions suffer the most. Basic needs like nutrition, healthcare, and education remain out of reach for millions.
The report calls attention to the urgent needs of children in crisis, while also showing that targeted action can make a difference. India’s reduction in child poverty demonstrates how policy changes can lift families out of hardship. Yet, for hundreds of millions of children, access to basic services remains a distant reality.
