United Airlines flight attendants overwhelmingly reject labour deal in historic vote
United Airlines flight attendants have overwhelmingly rejected a proposed labour agreement. In a vote with record turnout, 71% opposed the deal, forcing both sides back to negotiations. The union now plans to survey members to identify key priorities for a new contract.
The tentative agreement was put to a vote after months of talks between United and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), which represents 28,000 cabin crew. A striking 92% of members participated in the ballot, with the majority signalling dissatisfaction with the terms on offer.
The union had already sought federal mediation in 2023, citing frustration over stalled negotiations. Flight attendants have gone without a pay rise since 2020, and their demands include double-digit base pay increases, full compensation for all working hours, and retroactive payments. They are also pushing for more flexible scheduling, improved work rules, and clearer job security amid shifting fleet operations.
Ken Diaz, president of the United chapter of AFA, confirmed the deal failed to meet workers’ expectations. The union now insists on stronger commitments from the airline, emphasising respect for employees beyond operational needs. With pressure mounting, United faces calls to expand concessions or risk further unrest.
Both parties will return to the negotiating table in the coming weeks.
The rejection leaves United under renewed pressure to address flight attendants’ core concerns. A new survey will shape the union’s next steps, with pay, working conditions, and job stability at the forefront. Negotiations are set to resume as the airline seeks to avoid prolonged labour disputes.
