United Airlines Expands Reach to Spirit Destinations and Discusses A350 Order

United Airlines has recently expanded its network by offering tickets for connections to 15 typical Spirit Airlines destinations, providing alternative options for Spirit customers in case the low-cost airline encounters unexpected difficulties. The new flights are intended to cater to travellers who may be affected if Spirit Airlines were to suddenly cease operations.

Meanwhile, speculation about United's A350 order has been circulating in the industry. The airline's indecision regarding the order has led some to question whether it may be cancelled or converted to other Airbus models, such as the A321neo. According to United CEO Scott Kirby, converting Spirit Airlines' narrow-body aircraft to United's standards would take two to three years and cost tens of millions of dollars, a investment that United is not willing to make.

In other news, renowned journalist Astrid Roben has visited almost 70 countries during her career, primarily covering airlines, airports, and travel stories at our magazine. With over 20 years of experience, Roben has written several books for Geramond Verlag, including "The Big Book of Airlines," "The Joy of Flying," and "Thai Airways - From Small Domestic Flight Service to Star Alliance Member."

United Airlines is also planning to hire an additional 2,500 pilots by the end of next year due to increased aircraft deliveries, primarily from Boeing. However, United does not have enough gates in the key markets of Spirit Airlines, such as Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to accommodate a potential acquisition of the low-cost carrier's aircraft, slots, and routes.

It is important to note that the era of low-cost airlines in the US is not indicated to be over, as Spirit Airlines, based in Florida, has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year. Despite this, United has no plans to acquire aircraft, slots, and routes from Spirit Airlines.

Lastly, the need to replace older Boeing 767 and 777 aircraft is likely driving United's decision to convert the A350 order into firm orders this year, as United currently has 45 A350-900s on order. However, there is still speculation in the industry that United may cancel or convert the A350 order to other Airbus models. United CEO Scott Kirby has stated that the company will not submit a bid for the assets of Spirit Airlines if they come to market.
