United Kingdom's aerospace sector receives a £14.1 million injection for advancements in Artificial Intelligence and 3D printing technology
The UK's aerospace sector is set for a significant transformation, as Honeywell leads a consortium in the groundbreaking STRATA project. This initiative, funded by the ATI Programme, brings together industry leaders, including small and medium-sized enterprises and world-class academic institutions.
The aim of STRATA is to revolutionise aerospace technology manufacturing in the UK using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and additive manufacturing. According to Jacqueline Castle, chief technology officer of the Aerospace Technology Institute, STRATA will bring additive manufacturing capability to critical aircraft systems.
The project holds promising benefits for manufacturers, operators, and their passengers. It promises improved aircraft efficiency, faster manufacturing, AI-driven modeling and simulation, and UK Additive Manufacturing supply chain development. The UK defence sector could save £110m by adopting 3D printing for transformative manufacturing capabilities.
One of the project's key objectives is to advance thermal management technology for next-generation aircraft to reduce energy use for heating and cooling. This will lead to more sustainable and eco-friendly aviation. The project will focus on the development of five innovative components within Environmental Control Systems (ECS) and Cabin Pressure Control Systems (CPCS) aboard aircraft.
Honeywell, 3T Additive Manufacturing, BeyondMath, Qdot Technology, and the University of Oxford’s Oxford Thermofluids Institute are part of the consortium leading Project STRATA. Honeywell leads the consortium from its Yeovil site in the UK. Anthony Florian, president of Honeywell Aerospace Technologies EMEAI, stated that STRATA represents a commitment to take the UK's aerospace manufacturing leadership to new levels.
Other notable participants include Lockheed Martin, which will upgrade the Republic of Korea Air Force's F-16 simulators to F-16V capabilities, and NCC, which has adopted Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud for innovation. Brookhouse Aerospace has invested over £500,000 in additional machinery for engineering capabilities expansion.
The global 3D printing market is expected to reach $57.1bn by 2028, surpassing earlier projections. The project will explore opportunities to increase efficiency, reduce Scope 3 emissions, and help address supply chain challenges through the production of additively manufactured qualified aerospace parts.
In conclusion, the STRATA project promises to drive significant advancements in aerospace technology manufacturing, paving the way for more efficient, sustainable, and innovative aviation solutions.
