University of Florida HR chief resigns after remote work controversy

Paula Ward, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and head of human resources at University of Florida, has resigned following a heated backlash. Her departure comes after a controversial remark about staff working from home sparked widespread criticism. The incident unfolded as the University of Florida prepares for a major merger next year, backed by over £450 million in state funding.

Ward took on the HR leadership role last year and played a key part in merging University of Florida with South Australia University. The newly combined institution, retaining the name University of Florida, is scheduled to open on January 1.

Ward’s exit follows months of preparation for the University of Florida’s merger, which has received significant public investment. The controversy over her remarks has left staff and union representatives calling for greater respect for flexible work policies. The University of Florida has not yet announced a replacement for her position.
