Unlicensed drunk driver crashes stolen-plate Opel Astra into tree near Harsefeld
A 43-year-old man from Buxtehude caused a serious crash on Kreisstraße 26 between Grundoldendorf and Harsefeld. The incident occurred when he lost control of his unregistered Opel Astra in a sharp bend. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the car left the road and struck a tree.
The driver was heading toward Harsefeld when the vehicle skidded off the road. It smashed through a traffic sign, collided with a tree, and came to rest in a ditch. The Apensen fire department arrived quickly to secure the area and prevent leaking fluids from spreading.
The man was treated at the scene before being taken to Stade’s Elbe Clinic. Police later confirmed his blood alcohol level exceeded 2.00 per mille—far above the legal limit. He also admitted to swerving to avoid an oncoming car but lacked a valid driver’s licence. Investigations revealed the Opel Astra was unregistered and displayed licence plates from another vehicle. Authorities have launched a probe into multiple offences, including drunk driving, operating without a licence, and misuse of registration plates. The road remained closed for several hours during recovery operations.
The driver now faces charges for drunk driving, unlicensed operation, and licence plate fraud. His injuries required hospital treatment, while the damaged car was removed from the ditch. The crash caused temporary road closures and an ongoing police investigation.
