UNRWA's Hamas Ties Spark Rubio's Criticism, EU Funding

British author Jake Wallis Simons has commended Senator Marco Rubio's recent comments regarding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Rubio, a U.S. Senator from Florida, has been vocal about his concerns regarding UNRWA's alleged ties with Hamas in the Middle East.

Rubio has described UNRWA as a 'subsidiary of Hamas', a claim that has drawn attention to the agency's operations in Palestine. The U.S. Department of State has echoed these concerns, stating that UNRWA has a 'deep entanglement with and material support for Hamas terrorism'.

Despite these allegations, UNRWA continues to receive substantial funding from international bodies. In June 2023, the European Commission provided €52 million to the agency. However, not all nations are in agreement with this approach. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that UNRWA will not be involved in Middle East events.

UNRWA's Acting Commissioner-General, Christian Saunders, was succeeded by Philippe Lazzarini in March 2020. Lazzarini has defended the agency, citing an International Court of Justice ruling. Yet, UNRWA's presence in Gaza is seen by some as an obstacle to lasting peace in the region.

The future of UNRWA remains a contentious issue. While the EU continues to threaten sanctions against Israel, the U.S. maintains its stance on UNRWA. The agency's alleged ties with Hamas and its impact on the peace process in the Middle East continue to be hotly debated.
