US Air Force Selects Anduril and General Atomics for Autonomous Combat Drone Development
The US Air Force has selected Anduril Industries and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems to develop autonomous technologies in the first round of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program. These companies are competing against other major defense contractors to create advanced AI-powered combat drones that can operate alongside manned fighter jets.
Anduril, a tech startup known for its innovative defense solutions, has handed over its Fury drone to the Air Force. Ground testing is currently underway. General Atomics, famous for its MQ-9 Reaper drone, has also made progress with its YFQ-42A drone, which had its first flight in August. The first flight of Anduril's drone was initially delayed due to software development for semi-autonomous flight. The Air Force is considering a strategic basing process for placing these drones, with potential operation by the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and active duty forces. The ongoing government shutdown, however, has delayed the first flight of Anduril's drone.
Anduril and General Atomics are facing off in the first round of the CCA program, with awards for the second round expected within months. The Air Force is considering operating unmanned wingman drones in independent squadrons separate from the aircraft they'll be flying with. The successful development and demonstration of autonomous technologies in this phase will pave the way for further testing and eventual integration into the US military's air operations.
