US-India Ties ‘Completely Messed Up’ Under Trump, Says Congressman Subramanyam

Indian American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam has criticised President Donald Trump for damaging US-India relations. He claims the relationship has been 'completely messed up' under Trump’s leadership. The deterioration is now affecting both nations’ economic and strategic interests, according to Subramanyam.

Subramanyam points to personal clashes and policy disagreements between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the main cause of the downturn. He highlights the Trump administration’s tariffs as a key barrier to stronger economic ties. Despite bipartisan support for India in Congress, executive decisions have made progress difficult.

The weakening relationship also risks reducing US influence in Asia, Subramanyam warns. He argues that India remains a natural ally, especially in countering China’s regional dominance. To rebuild ties, he proposes deeper cooperation in defence, technology, and economic partnerships. Shifting global supply chains present another opportunity for collaboration, particularly in manufacturing. However, Subramanyam expresses frustration over unfulfilled US promises to end wars and boost trade. Without stronger commitments, he fears further setbacks in the partnership.

Subramanyam’s remarks highlight the current strain between the two nations. The fallout from tariffs and policy disputes has slowed progress in key areas. Both countries now face challenges in reviving a relationship once seen as vital for regional stability.
