USA and Venezuela should refrain from military actions
Switzerland has called on all sides in the Venezuela conflict to avoid military action. The appeal came on April 12, 2024, as tensions between Venezuela and the US continue to rise. The Swiss government warned that further military steps could destabilise peace in the region even more.
The dispute has worsened in recent weeks. The US tightened its blockade on Venezuelan oil tankers and increased its military presence in the Caribbean. In response, Venezuela requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.
Venezuela’s military has also carried out deadly attacks on boats it claims were involved in drug smuggling. These actions have added to the growing instability in the area.
Switzerland, which has long maintained diplomatic ties with Venezuela, stressed the need for restraint. The country has embassies in both Caracas and Maracaibo. To ease tensions, it has offered its services as a neutral mediator between the US and Venezuela. The Swiss government proposed confidential talks to help both sides communicate more effectively.
The Swiss Foreign Affairs Department has made clear that military escalation risks wider security threats. Its offer of mediation remains open as a way to reduce tensions. For now, the situation in the region stays uncertain, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
