Ussher, James Fort reopened to the public - Ministry of Tourism

Ussher Fort and James Fort have reopened to visitors after a temporary closure for safety reasons. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA) announced the decision following detailed reviews and discussions with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).

The two historic sites were shut down earlier due to concerns over visitor safety. During this period, the Ministry worked closely with the GMMB to assess risks and develop new protection measures.

Strict guidelines now regulate access to the forts, including monitoring systems to oversee visitor activities. All tourists, guides, and operators must follow the approved rules to avoid disrupting ongoing restoration work. Unauthorised entry into restricted zones remains banned. In a press release, the Ministry thanked the public for their patience during the closure. It also reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage while ensuring the sites stay safe and educational for future visitors. The statement was signed by Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

The reopening allows controlled public visits under the new safety framework. Tourists can now explore the forts while restoration efforts continue. The Ministry’s measures aim to balance heritage preservation with responsible tourism access.
