Uttar Pradesh bans Aadhaar as proof of birth date in major policy shift
The Uttar Pradesh government has banned the use of Aadhaar cards as proof of date of birth. Officials confirmed the decision on October 31, 2025, clarifying that only designated birth certificates will now be accepted for official purposes. The restriction follows concerns over Aadhaar’s reliability for verifying birth dates. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) does not authenticate the date of birth printed on Aadhaar cards. Aditya Prakash Bajpai, Deputy Director of UIDAI’s Lucknow regional office, formally declared that Aadhaar cannot serve as a legally recognised birth certificate. The change means residents must now rely on standard birth records for official transactions. Departments across Uttar Pradesh have already begun enforcing the new policy. The UIDAI’s stance on Aadhaar’s limitations has reinforced the state’s decision.
