UVA Joins Nationwide Protest Against Trump's 'Compact for Academic Excellence'
University of Virginia (UVA) and other institutions across the nation will unite on Friday to protest the 'Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education'. The compact, widely criticized by faculty and higher education leaders since its October 1 circulation, has sparked a national day of action.
Brown University has already rejected the agreement on Wednesday. UVA faculty members have publicly stated that students, faculty, and staff stand against the compact, advocating for academic freedom and institutional independence. Student leaders at UVA and seven other universities have signed a joint letter opposing the compact.
On Friday, faculty, students, staff, and alumni from UVA will participate in a press conference, rally, and march. This event is part of a broader national day of action involving all nine universities initially invited to sign the compact, including MIT, which has already declared it will not sign the agreement.
President Trump had invited the rest of higher education to sign the compact via social media over the weekend. However, the widespread criticism and upcoming protests indicate a strong resistance among academic institutions against the compact's provisions.
