Valerie Wendenburg to become deputy government spokesperson

Valerie Wendenburg will take over as deputy government spokesperson for Canton Basel-Stadt on 1 March 2026. She replaces Jakob Gubler, who will retire after years of service. The State Chancellery’s public relations team plays a key role in keeping residents informed about government work.

Wendenburg currently works as an editor for the Basel-based online outlet Bajour and the weekly magazine Tachles. Before this, she gained experience in print, radio, and television. Her background includes a range of media roles, giving her a strong foundation in communication.

From 2019 to 2022, she served as head of public relations for the municipal administration of Bottmingen. There, she established the town’s communications department, shaping its approach to public messaging. In her new position, she will join Deputy State Chancellor Marco Greiner’s team. Her responsibilities will include overseeing media and public communications for the cantonal government. This involves preparing and coordinating messaging for the weekly executive council meetings. The role ensures residents stay updated on government initiatives, activities, and administrative processes, encouraging civic engagement. Wendenburg’s appointment follows Jakob Gubler’s retirement, which takes effect on 28 February 2026. Gubler has held the deputy spokesperson position for several years, managing key aspects of the canton’s public relations work.

The State Chancellery’s public relations team will now include Wendenburg as a central figure. She will help maintain transparency between the government and the public. Her experience in media and municipal communications will support the canton’s ongoing efforts to inform and engage residents.
