Van crash on A43 highway sparks drug and traffic chaos near Dortmund
A 20-year-old van driver from Essen lost control of his vehicle in a construction zone on the A43 highway near Dortmund. The crash caused significant disruption, with debris scattering across the road and multiple lanes temporarily closed for clearance and repairs. The incident began when the van swerved and collided with construction site barriers and a mobile concrete safety wall. It came to rest across the left lane, blocking traffic. Two following drivers—a 28-year-old woman from Witten and a 21-year-old man from Velbert—drove over the scattered debris, damaging their cars.
Authorities suspected the van driver of being under the influence and required a blood sample for testing. Witnesses at the scene reported unusual behaviour, prompting a search of the vehicle. This led to the discovery of a hidden bag filled with untaxed cigarettes. Police also seized two foreign driver's licences from the man and imposed a security deposit. The Münster-bound lanes were temporarily shut for debris removal, while the left lane toward Wuppertal remained closed for barrier repairs. The full extent of the damage, including costs, has yet to be assessed.
The crash caused traffic delays and left two additional drivers with vehicle damage. Investigations into the driver's condition and the untaxed goods are ongoing. Repairs to the highway barriers will continue before the lane fully reopens.
