VBB to Boost Regional Train Capacity, Eases Weekend Crowds to Stralsund

The Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has announced plans to address the chronic overcrowding on regional trains serving Berlin's outskirts and the popular weekend destination of Stralsund. The new managing director, Christoph Heuing, who took office in early May 2025, is spearheading these efforts.

Heuing, previously leading the Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen for a decade, has found the current situation on regional trains to Berlin's outskirts unbearable for passengers. With the Germany ticket driving increased demand and limited rail infrastructure struggling to keep up, the VBB is planning an hourly service between Berlin and Stralsund starting in December. This move aims to boost capacity and alleviate the weekend crowds that often prioritize wheelchairs and strollers over bikes.

The VBB's 'i2030' infrastructure project is another key strategy to create more capacities. While specific measures to tackle the increased demand for regional trains are still under consideration, the VBB is committed to enhancing public transportation through unified fare systems, improved scheduling, and strategic development of services.

The VBB's new boss, Christoph Heuing, is taking decisive steps to tackle the overcrowding on regional trains serving Berlin's outskirts and Stralsund. With an hourly service planned for December and the 'i2030' infrastructure project underway, passengers can expect improvements in capacity and comfort. Meanwhile, cyclists are advised to refrain from taking their bikes on weekends to help manage the crowds.
