Weimer demands democratization in Venezuela - Venezuela’s Power Shift Sparks Hope as Germany Backs Exiles and Reforms

A U.S. military raid in Venezuela earlier this year led to the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro, who was taken to the United States. In response, Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as Venezuela’s interim leader. Meanwhile, German officials have begun supporting Venezuelan exiles and calling for democratic reforms in the country.

The operation marked a sudden shift in Venezuela’s political landscape. Maduro’s removal prompted Rodríguez to assume temporary control of the government. Her appointment followed the U.S. action, which has reshaped the nation’s leadership.

In Berlin, Germany’s federal commissioner for culture and media, Wolfram Weimer, hosted a gathering of Venezuelan artists, journalists, and intellectuals at the Chancellery. He described the current moment as a 'chance for opening' and reaffirmed Germany’s support for democracy in Venezuela. Weimer also demanded that Deutsche Welle, the German international broadcaster, be allowed to operate freely in the country once more.

The commissioner announced plans for new programmes to assist exiled Venezuelans, focusing on cultural and journalistic work. Many attendees expressed a mix of anxiety and hope about the future. Luis Miguel Isava, a professor of Venezuelan literature, stated that the U.S. operation had raised expectations for change.

Weimer also called on Venezuela’s new leadership to release all political prisoners. His remarks underscored Germany’s stance on human rights and press freedom in the country.

The U.S. raid and Maduro’s capture have set off a chain of political developments in Venezuela. With Rodríguez now in charge, international observers—including German officials—are pushing for democratic progress. The situation remains fluid, but support for exiled voices and demands for reform continue to grow.
