Veteran diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu becomes Delhi's new Lieutenant Governor

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a seasoned diplomat with over 30 years of experience, has taken over as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. He replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has since moved to a similar role in Ladakh. Sandhu's appointment follows a long career in foreign service, including a recent term as India's Ambassador to the United States.

Born on January 23, 1963, Sandhu completed his early education at The Lawrence School in Sanawar and St. Stephen's College in Delhi. He later earned a Master's in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

His diplomatic career began in Russia and Ukraine, where he helped establish India's diplomatic presence. As a 1988 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, he went on to serve as India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from 2017 to 2020. His most recent role before this appointment was as India's Ambassador to the United States, a position he held from 2020 to 2024.

Sandhu is recognized for his expertise in US-India relations. He is married to Reenat Sandhu, also a senior officer in the Indian Foreign Service, and the couple has two children.

The transition comes as Vinai Kumar Saxena assumes the role of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, following Kavinder Gupta's resignation. Sandhu's extensive background in diplomacy now shifts to administrative leadership in Delhi. His tenure begins with no specific political or diplomatic priorities publicly outlined.
