Veteran Journalist Heinz Nußbaumer Dies at 82

Veteran journalist Heinz Nußbaumer, a prominent figure in Austrian media, has passed away at the age of 82. Known for his extensive career, Nußbaumer's influence spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on journalism and interfaith dialogue.

Nußbaumer's journey began in 1966 when he joined the Salzburger Volkszeitung as an editor. His first major assignment came three years later, covering the Six-Day War in Israel at just 24 years old. He rose through the ranks, becoming section editor in 1971, a role he held until 1989. During his time at the Salzburger Volkszeitung, Nußbaumer also served as press secretary to future Austrian Chancellor Josef Klaus.

In 2003, Nußbaumer began a new chapter, co-editing the Catholic weekly Die Furche with Wilfried Stadler until 2023. Before that, he had served as press spokesman for Austrian Presidents Kurt Waldheim and Thomas Klestil. Despite retiring from the Salzburger Volkszeitung in 2018 due to health issues stemming from his years of travel to war zones and crisis regions, Nußbaumer remained active in promoting dialogue and understanding among churches and religions until his passing.

Nußbaumer's legacy extends beyond journalism. As a devout Catholic and sought-after interlocutor, he fostered dialogue among senior figures in churches and faith communities. His book, 'The Monk in Me' about Mount Athos, became a megabestseller, further cementing his influence. Heinz Nußbaumer's passing leaves a void in Austrian journalism and interfaith relations, but his contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
