vHive: Championing data-driven innovation to improve animal health

A new hub for animal health innovation has taken shape in Surrey. Called vHive, it brings together academia and industry to tackle challenges in livestock and pet care. The initiative combines research, start-up support, and data-driven solutions under one roof.

Launched in 2023, vHive is a joint effort between the University of Surrey and Zoetis, the world’s largest animal health company. Its mission centres on improving health outcomes through data analytics, translational research, and start-up incubation. Since opening, the incubator has already supported 24 early-stage companies across four intake groups.

The hub also runs regular events to discuss pressing issues in animal health. These gatherings encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. Topics under investigation range from chronic diseases and immunotherapies to infectious diseases and sustainability.

To aid research, vHive is building a Biobank for storing animal biological samples and clinical data. This resource will help scientists explore new treatments and diagnostic tools. The team has already published papers highlighting key challenges in veterinary innovation, though specific breakthroughs from the incubator are not yet reported.

vHive’s approach blends academic expertise with industry experience. By fostering start-ups and advancing research, it aims to shape the future of animal health. The partnership continues to expand, with ongoing work in data-driven solutions and collaborative innovation.
