Vienna Bar Association Marks 175 Years of Legal Independence and Justice

The Vienna Bar Association (RAK Wien) celebrated its 175th anniversary with a grand event at the Palais Esterházy. Around 100 guests from politics, justice, and business, along with legal professionals, attended the milestone celebration. The occasion highlighted the significance of lawyer self-governance in a functioning constitutional state and liberal democracy.

Justice Minister Alma Zadić underscored the relevance of lawyer self-governance, stressing its importance for a well-functioning justice system. Roman Završek, First Vice-President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), delved into 'Protecting Our Justice System: Understanding the Role of Self-Regulation'. Professor Ewald Wiederin provided a constitutional and administrative law perspective on 'The Self-Governance of the Legal Profession'.

The event featured greetings from various legal association presidents and a keynote by Professor Ilse Reiter-Zatloukal, who explored 'Lawyer Self-Governance as a Criterion of a Free State: A Historical Perspective'. RAK Wien President Peter Csoklich emphasized the importance of reaffirming the independence and self-governance of the legal profession.

Established in 1850 as an independent, self-governing body, RAK Wien has represented lawyers' interests for 175 years. The anniversary event underscored the enduring relevance of lawyer self-governance in maintaining a robust justice system and a free state.
