Vienna man arrested for posing as police officer in taxi driver scam
A 38-year-old man has been arrested in Vienna after allegedly posing as a police officer to defraud a taxi driver. The incident took place on Kundratstraße
The taxi driver, a 36-year-old woman, had previously applied to join the police force but was rejected. The suspect approached her, falsely claiming to be a high-ranking officer. He offered to help her reapply in exchange for money and copies of personal documents.
She initially paid him a sum in the low three-digit euro range. Just days later, he demanded an additional payment in the mid-two-digit euros. Suspecting foul play, the woman alerted the police, leading to his arrest. The man has since denied the allegations. However, officers released him while reporting the case for further investigation on suspicion of serious fraud and impersonating an official. Official police records show that Vienna has seen a rise in such scams. Between 2024 and 2025, around 150 cases of fraud involving fake officials—including false police and tax officers—were reported. This marks a 20% increase compared to previous years, according to the city's criminal police reports.
The suspect remains under investigation for fraud and impersonation. Police continue to warn residents about similar scams targeting vulnerable individuals. The case highlights an ongoing trend of deception involving fake officials in the city.
