Vienna’s Christmas lights sparkle brighter than ever in 2025
Vienna’s festive season has officially begun with the switching on of Christmas lights across the city. On Friday evening, Mayor Michael Ludwig and Margarete Kriz-Zwittkovits, Vice President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, lit up the decorations at Neuer Markt. This year, more streets and neighbourhoods than ever will shine with holiday illumination.
The lighting ceremony took place at Neuer Markt, a location that only received Christmas decorations for the first time last year. This time, the square is adorned with 48 'Sisi Stars' alongside the usual Christmas tree lights. The Wilfried-Kampa Foundation has stepped in to fund the city centre’s lighting for 2025, allowing for extra support staff and expanded Christmas light displays.
The Christmas lights will remain on throughout the Advent season, illuminating streets from Döbling to the city centre. With greater funding and wider participation, Vienna’s festive Christmas decorations have grown in scale. The collaboration between the city, businesses, and foundations ensures the displays will continue to expand in future years.
