Vienna’s lost vineyard shortcut reopens after 15 years of disputes
A long-closed footpath through Vienna’s Grinzing vineyards has finally reopened. The Mitterbergstiege, a steep 200-metre shortcut leading up to Kahlenberg, was shut for 15 years due to funding disputes. Officials have now restored access just in time for this year’s Wine Hiking Day.
The path was originally closed after the City of Vienna and the Döbling district failed to agree on who should pay for repairs. For over a decade, walkers and hikers had to take longer routes, as no permanent solution was found.
The Mitterbergstiege is once more a usable path for hikers and wine lovers. While the temporary repairs have drawn scrutiny, the long-term restoration will provide a permanent solution. The path’s reopening comes as welcome news for visitors heading to Kahlenberg.
