Việt Nam Day 2025 celebrates 50 years of friendship with New Zealand

Việt Nam Day 2025 took place in Wellington to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Việt Nam and New Zealand. The event, organised by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese Students’ Association in Wellington (VSAW), showcased culture, history, and youth engagement. Traditional food, performances, and a photo exhibition highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two nations.

The celebration coincided with several key milestones, including the 80th National Day of Việt Nam. Ambassador Phan Minh Giang emphasised the event’s importance in strengthening bilateral relations and honouring the contributions of overseas Vietnamese.

The programme, themed The Rising Line, presented a modern and dynamic Việt Nam. It focused on peace, independence, and sustainable growth through artistic performances. International students also joined the event, adding to the cultural exchange among Wellington’s foreign student communities.

A quiz challenge called Giao Lộ 50 (Crossroads 50) tested Vietnamese students’ knowledge of the five decades of relations between the two countries. Alongside the quiz, a photo exhibition and traditional cuisine were featured, offering attendees a glimpse into Việt Nam’s heritage.

The embassy recognised the VSAW for its role in making Việt Nam Day an annual news event. Awards were given to individuals and groups within the VSAW and the Vietnamese Students’ Association in New Zealand (VSANZ) for their work in student engagement and community service.

The event reinforced the role of overseas Vietnamese in preserving national identity abroad. It also opened new opportunities for cooperation between Việt Nam and New Zealand. The embassy and student associations plan to continue fostering cultural and educational exchanges in the future.
