Việt Nam's 15th National Assembly leaves a legacy of reform and global partnerships
Việt Nam's 15th National Assembly (2021–2026) has wrapped up its term after navigating a difficult global landscape. Despite challenges, it delivered key reforms, including a five-year legislative plan and stronger public accountability measures. The 16th National Assembly will now take forward these efforts, focusing on legal improvements and international commitments.
The 15th National Assembly introduced major changes to streamline governance. A five-year legislative agenda was approved to ensure consistency in lawmaking. Policies were also reshaped to prioritise the needs of citizens and businesses, aiming to simplify public administration.
Accountability received a boost with the launch of the first parliamentary supervision forum. This new platform reinforced transparency and the rule of law. Meanwhile, digital transformation became a priority, with artificial intelligence and modern infrastructure integrated into parliamentary operations. On the international stage, parliamentary diplomacy gained prominence. A standout development was the upgrade of Việt Nam–Malaysia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in November 2024. Although no specific joint projects have been recorded since, the move creates potential for closer inter-parliamentary ties. Cooperation between the two nations—despite differing political systems—serves as a regional model, particularly in areas like the Halal industry and green economy. The 16th National Assembly will build on these foundations. Its tasks include refining the legal system and advancing Việt Nam's global obligations.
The 15th National Assembly's reforms set a clearer path for lawmaking and public service. Digital upgrades and stronger diplomatic links now provide a framework for the 16th term. With a focus on legal refinement and international cooperation, the next assembly will shape Việt Nam's policy direction in the years ahead.
