Vietnam and Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture deepen economic and cultural ties

Party General Secretary Tô Lâm recently welcomed Kuroiwa Yuji, Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture, highlighting the prefecture's significant contributions to promoting ties with Việt Nam in various sectors. The meeting comes amidst a surge in economic cooperation, with 22 Japanese enterprises investing in Kanagawa Prefecture since 2015 and 32 Kanagawa firms investing in Việt Nam.

The two leaders discussed the expansion of this cooperation, with Kanagawa ready to share its experience in health care and ageing society response through the MEBYO initiative. Notably, Kanagawa is the first Japanese locality to organise annual festivals and investment and labour promotion events in both countries, fostering cultural exchange and economic growth.

The Governor's proposals were welcomed by Tô Lâm, who called on Kanagawa to maintain regular Việt Nam-Japan cultural festivals. The search for collaboration models revealed no information about Japanese companies investing in Vietnam based on a Kanagawa Prefecture model, but cooperation between Dong Nai Province and Ehime Prefecture has seen over 30 Vietnamese-Japanese companies thrive in supplier industries, semiconductors, and aerospace since early 2025.

A musical titled Princess Anio, inspired by a 400-year-old love story between an Vietnamese princess and a Japanese merchant, is set to debut in Kanagawa in September next year, further enriching the cultural exchange.

With economic cooperation as the key pillar of the Việt Nam-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and science and technology emerging as a new pillar, Kanagawa Prefecture is committed to further strengthening cooperation with Việt Nam in labour, cultural and people-to-people exchange. The prefecture's experience in health care and ageing society response, along with its cultural initiatives, is set to deepen the ties between the two nations.
