Vietnam and Solomon Islands Deepen Diplomatic Ties in Historic Hanoi Meeting
Vietnam and the Solomon Islands recently bolstered their diplomatic ties with a high-level visit in Hanoi on November 11, 2021. This marked the highest-level meeting since the countries established relations in 1996. The visit saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation Framework, reflecting a commitment to strengthen bilateral relations.
During the visit, Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính hosted his Solomon Islands counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Peter Shanel Agovaka. Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, healthcare, and transport infrastructure. They also pledged to increase high-level visits and promote people-to-people exchanges.
The Solomon Islands' minister praised Vietnam's resilience and growth rate, while Vietnam offered support in human resources training and technical development in fisheries and agriculture. The two sides also agreed to strengthen coordination and mutual support in regional and international forums, particularly at the United Nations. Additionally, PM Chính proposed signing agreements to facilitate travel between the two countries, starting with visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders.
Vietnam will send a delegation to explore investment opportunities in the Solomon Islands, focusing on local fishing and processing facilities and seafood exports. This visit signals a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries, with both sides committed to expanding cooperation and strengthening diplomatic ties.
