Vietnam and Solomon Islands Forge Stronger Ties in Historic Ministerial Visit
Vietnam and the Solomon Islands have strengthened their ties with a high-level visit. Solomon Islands' Foreign Minister Peter Shanel Agovaka visited Vietnam from November 11-13, 2025, marking the first official visit by a Solomon Islands foreign minister to Vietnam and the highest-level bilateral visit in nearly 30 years.
During the visit, Vietnam proposed enhancing cooperation with the Solomon Islands in various sectors. These include trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, construction materials, and human resource development. Vietnam commended the Solomon Islands' open foreign policy and thanked it for supporting Vietnam's UN Human Rights Council candidacy and participating in the Hanoi Convention signing ceremony.
Both ministers reaffirmed their support for multilateralism, international law, and the role of the UN and regional organizations like ASEAN and PIF. They agreed to deepen practical cooperation in high-potential sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, construction, tourism, and mining. Vietnam expressed its readiness to send experts to support the Solomon Islands in agriculture and fisheries, and to encourage businesses to invest in seafood processing plants. Vietnam also sought to facilitate licensing of Vietnamese enterprises for joint fishing operations in Solomon Islands' waters. The ministers committed to expediting agreements on visa exemptions and investment protection, promotion, and double taxation avoidance.
Vietnam values its relationship with the Solomon Islands due to the latter's geostrategic importance and maritime resources. The Solomon Islands' minister praised Vietnam's socio-economic development and expressed a desire to learn from its experience for sustainable national development. Both ministers welcomed the positive development of bilateral relations over nearly three decades since diplomatic ties were established in 1996.
