Vietnam Elected to UN Human Rights Council, Showcasing Global Influence

Vietnam has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026-2028, receiving the highest votes in the Asia-Pacific group. This comes as the country continues to show solidarity with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and promotes unity and innovation within the organisation.

At the UN headquarters in New York City on October 14, 2025, Vietnam was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council. Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, representing Vietnam, spoke at the 19th NAM Ministerial Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, promoting South-South cooperation and a common stance on global governance issues. Vietnam's commitment to NAM is evident, with the country now having 121 member countries since its establishment in 1961 with twenty-five founding countries.

Vietnam will also chair the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, demonstrating its responsibility in global affairs. In the Middle East, Vietnam welcomed the Israel-Hamas agreement and supported a two-state solution. Furthermore, Vietnam expressed commitment to hosting the UN Convention against Cybercrime signature event in October 2023, showing its dedication to international cooperation.

Vietnam's election to the UN Human Rights Council and its active role within NAM reflect the country's growing influence on the global stage. Its commitment to unity, innovation, and effectiveness within NAM, along with its responsible approach to international issues, is evident in its recent actions.
