Vietnam & Finland Strengthen Strategic Partnership, Agree on Green Transition and IUU Fishing Cooperation
Acting Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Lê Hoài Trung and Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen have met, discussing ways to strengthen their countries' strategic partnership. The officials agreed on several key points, including cooperation on green transition and IUU fishing, as well as maintaining high-level delegation exchanges.
Trung proposed that Finland assist in accelerating the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the lifting of the 'yellow card' warning for Vietnam's seafood exports. Both officials agreed to enhance coordination in regional and international issues and promote multilateralism.
Trung invited Elina Valtonen to pay an official visit to Vietnam soon, with Valtonen accepting the invitation. This visit will be significant, as Finland is the first Nordic country to establish a strategic partnership with Vietnam. Finland expressed its willingness to strengthen joint work in green transition efforts, aiming to help Vietnam achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Additionally, Finland is eager to improve technical capacity to remove the 'yellow card' warning on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Valtonen expressed delight in the positive development of bilateral relations between Finland and Vietnam, and congratulated Vietnam on its re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The officials agreed to promptly coordinate on an action plan for their countries' new strategic partnership.
The meeting between Lê Hoài Trung and Elina Valtonen has set the stage for enhanced cooperation between Vietnam and Finland. With a focus on green transition, IUU fishing, and strategic partnership, both countries look forward to strengthening their ties in the coming months.
