Vietnam Leads Global Seminar on BBNJ Agreement Implementation

Vietnam's Ambassador Đỗ Hùng Việt chaired an international seminar on the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement, held on Saturday during the 80th UN General Assembly's International Law Week. The seminar, attended by experts, scientists, and representatives from nearly 100 countries, discussed key aspects of the Agreement adopted by the UN General Assembly on June 19, 2023, set to enter into force on January 17, 2026.

Dr. Nguyễn Thị Lan Anh, Vietnam's candidate for ITLOS judge, stressed the importance of capacity-building and technology transfer for effective implementation. Ambassador Đỗ Hùng Việt supported her suggestions. The seminar explored implementing provisions on environmental impact assessment (EIA), area-based management tools (ABMTs), and financial mechanisms. Participants urged developing countries to assess priorities, promote cooperation, and utilize the Agreement's mechanisms to protect national interests and contribute to global efforts. The BBNJ Agreement aims to establish international institutions like the Conference of the Parties (COP), scientific and technical bodies, financial mechanisms, compliance committees, and a Secretariat. Vietnam, among the first signatories and early ratifiers, is committed to its successful implementation.

The seminar provided a platform for international cooperation and understanding of the BBNJ Agreement's provisions. With Vietnam's active participation and support, the Agreement's entry into force in 2026 is expected to bring significant benefits to global marine biodiversity and navigation.
