Vietnam & Malaysia Strengthen Fisheries & Agri Cooperation
Vietnam and Malaysia have agreed to bolster their cooperation in fisheries management and agricultural development. A tripartite information-sharing mechanism will be established to facilitate timely exchange, and a Joint Working Group (JWG) will be set up to review and amend the 2014 MoU on agricultural cooperation, with a focus on sustainable fisheries and IUU prevention.
The two countries have agreed to strengthen coordination in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. They also discussed facilitating trade in agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, promoting investment, and fostering green and sustainable agriculture initiatives. Vietnamese investment in Malaysia's seafood sector was highlighted as a promising area for deeper cooperation.
The JWG's first meeting is scheduled for early November. It will detail cooperative actions and enhance policy dialogue, aiming to promote responsible fisheries development and remove the EU 'yellow card' from Vietnam's fisheries exports. However, no information is available about the chairperson expected for this meeting.
Vietnam and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable fisheries and agricultural development. With the establishment of the tripartite information-sharing mechanism and the JWG, both countries look forward to enhanced cooperation, leading to improved fisheries management and increased agricultural trade.
