Vietnam Re-elected to UNHRC with Record Asia-Pacific Votes
Vietnam has secured a third term on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), re-elected with an overwhelming 180 votes in favor. This is the highest number in the Asia-Pacific group, reflecting global trust in Vietnam's commitment to human rights.
Vietnam's new term begins on January 1, 2026, and will focus on eight key areas. These include boosting UNHRC effectiveness, addressing human rights in climate change and digital transformation, promoting gender equality, safeguarding vulnerable groups, and ensuring rights to health, work, education, and human rights education.
During its candidacy, Vietnam pledged to 12 voluntary commitments in various human rights areas. These commitments align with Vietnam's national development goals, such as building a rule-of-law state, legal reform, international integration, innovation, and digital transformation. Notably, Vietnam is the only Asia-Pacific country to be re-elected to the UNHRC for the 2026-2028 term after serving in the previous term.
Vietnam's re-election to the UNHRC is a testament to its dedication and progress in promoting and protecting human rights. With its new term, Vietnam aims to continue its efforts in these critical areas, contributing to the global human rights agenda.
