Vietnam schedules 2026 elections with new laws and 864 candidates

Vietnam has set the date for its next major elections. The 16th National Assembly and People's Councils will be chosen on March 15, 2026. Preparations are already underway following changes to the election laws last year.

The 15th National Assembly passed amendments to election laws on June 24, 2025. These changes took effect on July 1, 2025, setting new rules for the upcoming vote.

Election materials and ballot papers will be ready by March 2, 2026. Official campaigning will then run from March 3 to March 14, 2026. Authorities must resolve complaints about voter rolls by March 10, 2026, while issues involving candidates must be settled by March 5, 2026.

A total of 864 candidates have been nominated for the National Assembly election. Among them, 65 are non-party members. The list also includes representatives from different sectors, social groups, regions, and ethnic minorities.

The election on March 15, 2026, will mark the transition to the 16th National Assembly. With updated laws and a structured timeline, the process aims to ensure smooth voting and fair representation. The results will shape Vietnam's political leadership for the coming term.
