Vietnam’s Prime Minister seeks stronger ties with Kuwait in historic GCC visit

Vietnam's Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính is set to visit Kuwait from November 16 to 24, 2023. This marks the first such visit by a Vietnamese leader in 16 years, coinciding with Kuwait's GCC presidency. The trip aims to strengthen bilateral ties and explore cooperation in various sectors.

The visit comes as Kuwait, through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, has provided $190 million in concessional financing for 15 Vietnamese infrastructure projects. This financial support underscores the strong relationship between the two nations.

During his stay, Prime Minister Chính will meet with Kuwait's Emir, Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jabir as-Sabah, and hold talks with the Kuwaiti Prime Minister. He will also address the Kuwait Diplomatic Institute, further cementing diplomatic ties.

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, a Kuwaiti state-owned company, is already invested in Vietnam, co-owning the $9 billion Nghi Sơn Refinery and Petrochemical LLC. Both countries aim to expand this cooperation to include oil, gas, energy, finance, food security, and tourism.

With Kuwait being Vietnam's largest GCC trade partner and investor, this visit presents an opportunity to enhance economic ties. Vietnam hopes Kuwait's support for a Vietnam-GCC Free Trade Agreement in 2023, with bilateral trade reaching $7.3 billion in 2022, will further boost their partnership.
