Vietnam's Top Leader Meets UK Deputy PM, Pledges to Boost Bilateral Trade to $15 Billion
Vietnam's Party General Secretary Tô Lâm recently visited London, where he held a zoom meeting with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy. The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. During their talks, Lammy emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperation in several key areas, including trade, defence, energy, innovation, aviation, and maritime safety. He described the upgrade of ties as a 'historic milestone'. This zoom meeting is not the first time General Secretary Tô Lâm has engaged with high-level UK officials. In October 2025, he met with former Prime Minister Tony Blair and the current Prime Minister Keir Starmer during an official visit. During this trip, Tô Lâm also held discussions with other senior UK officials. In a gesture to foster closer ties, Lammy pledged to simplify visa procedures for highly skilled Vietnamese workers. Before their zoom meeting, Tô Lâm and Lammy engaged with leaders of the UK - Việt Nam Network, established in 2013 to promote cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries. General Secretary Tô Lâm expressed gratitude to Lammy for his support in strengthening Việt Nam - UK relations. Tô Lâm suggested drafting an Action Plan and reinforcing cooperation mechanisms to boost two-way trade to US$15 billion. He also extended an invitation to UK Government leaders, including Lammy, to visit Việt Nam to further enhance dialogue and cooperation.
