Violent shoplifting escalates into assault at Bonn supermarket
Two men were arrested after a violent shoplifting incident at a supermarket in Bonn. The confrontation began when a witness alerted staff to suspected theft. The suspects then attacked a loss prevention officer and the witness before fleeing without payment.
The incident unfolded around 8:00 p.m. when a witness spotted two men, aged 34 and 36, allegedly stealing items. The witness informed a 26-year-old loss prevention officer, who confronted the pair. Instead of cooperating, the suspects refused to return the goods and turned violent.
Both the officer and the 18-year-old witness were assaulted before the men left the store without paying. Police later apprehended the suspects and took them into temporary custody. They were then transported to the police headquarters for questioning. On Monday, March 30, 2026, prosecutors from the Bonn Public Prosecutor's Office requested a hearing before a magistrate. The 34-year-old suspect, already known to police for similar offences, was ordered into pretrial detention. He was subsequently transferred to a correctional facility.
The 36-year-old suspect remains in custody while investigations continue. The loss prevention officer and witness sustained injuries during the attack. Authorities have not yet released further details on public reaction or media coverage of the case.
