Virginia Faith Leaders Push for Housing Bills to Address Shortage
Faith communities in Virginia face financial hurdles in developing affordable housing on their land. To address this and the state's housing shortage, Alexandria leaders, including Mayor Alyia Gaskins, will join a gathering on Sunday, organized by VOICE and the Commonwealth Housing Coalition.
The event, held at Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon from 3:30 to 5 p.m., aims to urge gubernatorial candidates and other officials to support three pro-housing bills in the upcoming General Assembly session. State Sen. Adam Ebbin, representing parts of Alexandria, is expected to attend.
Virginia faces a severe housing shortfall, with only around 30,000 homes built recently, while needing over 300,000 additional homes to meet demand. The housing crisis affects various groups, including young people, seniors, working families, and public employees like teachers. The coalition of over 50 organizations will push for a 'Yes in God's Backyard' measure, legislation expanding access to accessory dwelling units, and a 'housing near jobs' bill.
The event seeks to bring together leaders and candidates to discuss and commit to addressing Virginia's housing shortage and affordability crisis. By supporting these bills, they can help faith communities and other stakeholders overcome financial barriers to developing affordable housing.
