Volker Türk: "No Bias Against Israel"
The UN’s top human rights official has warned that conditions in Gaza remain catastrophic, despite a recent ceasefire. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the situation as dire, with heavy rainfall worsening hardships for displaced civilians living in tents. His remarks follow months of documented abuses by both Israel and Hamas since the war began in October 2023.
The conflict erupted after Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Over 1,200 people were killed, and around 250 were taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Gaza, which Palestinian authorities say has resulted in more than 70,000 deaths.
Between October 2023 and December 2025, Türk repeatedly issued public statements and reports condemning serious human rights violations. He called for independent investigations into alleged war crimes and urged all parties to comply with international law. His office pressed for civilian protection, humanitarian access, and accountability, while supporting UN fact-finding efforts.
Türk has consistently addressed abuses by both sides, rejecting claims of bias against Israel. He stated that he speaks out on all serious violations without exception. However, he declined to label Israel’s military actions as 'genocide', citing the ongoing case before the International Criminal Court.
While the ceasefire is seen as a crucial development, Türk stressed that the humanitarian crisis persists. Flooding from recent rains has made life even harder for those sheltering in makeshift camps.
The ceasefire offers temporary relief, but Gaza’s population continues to face extreme hardship. Türk’s reports highlight the urgent need for accountability and humanitarian aid. The conflict’s toll—with tens of thousands dead and infrastructure devastated—remains a central concern for international observers.
