Von der Leyen demands tougher Russia sanctions to force peace talks
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged stronger measures against Russia to force a shift toward peace. Speaking after a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Resolute, she stressed that sanctions have already weakened Moscow’s economy and its ability to fund the war in Ukraine.
Von der Leyen pointed to the success of transatlantic sanctions, calling them a key factor in limiting Russia’s military resources. She argued that Moscow only reacts under pressure and vowed to increase it until a real commitment to peace emerges.
The latest meeting reinforced the coalition’s focus on tightening sanctions and securing Ukraine’s future. Von der Leyen’s call for sustained pressure reflects a belief that only economic strain will push Russia toward negotiations. The inclusion of the US secretary of state suggests growing coordination between Europe and Washington on the issue.
