Vonovia criticizes rent brake as "socially blind"

Ruth Werhahn, Vonovia’s HR chief, has spoken out against Germany’s current rent control measures. She described the policy as 'socially blind' and argued it fails to target those most in need. Her comments came alongside broader discussions on solving the country’s housing shortage.

In March 2023, Werhahn met with officials from the Federal Ministry for Housing, led by Minister Klara Geywitz, in Berlin. During these talks, she was urged to focus on accelerating apartment construction. Werhahn agreed, stressing that new housing developments remain the most effective way to ease the crisis.

She also voiced support for government plans to tackle rent gouging. However, she criticised the existing rent cap for not doing enough to protect low-income tenants. At the same time, she positioned Vonovia as a key player in addressing the issue, highlighting the company’s role in building new homes.

Werhahn further linked Berlin’s controversial expropriation push to the wider fight for affordable housing. Her remarks underscored the need for balanced policies that encourage investment while preventing exploitation.

Werhahn’s stance reflects a mix of criticism and cooperation with policymakers. She backs efforts to curb unfair rent hikes but insists on construction as the long-term answer. The debate over Germany’s housing policies is likely to continue as pressure grows for tangible solutions.
