Vorkuta’s City Council elects Igor Guryev as new mayor in open vote
Vorkuta has elected a new head of the city following a public vote by local deputies. The decision came during the fourth regular session of the City Council on December 12, 2025. Two candidates had been put forward for the role by the head of the Republic of Komi. The session began with both nominated candidates—Sergei Zhdanov and Igor Guryev—addressing the council. After their speeches, deputies proceeded to an open vote, as agreed beforehand. The election marks the end of a structured selection process, with Guryev now officially in charge. His term begins immediately after the council’s confirmation. The previous mayor, Vitaly Kovalchuk, had held the position for over a year before stepping down.
