Wa Airport faces growing safety risks from illegal encroachment
Authorities in Wa are raising alarm over increasing encroachment around the airport, posing a significant aviation safety threat. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has warned that the situation could lead to a crisis if not addressed promptly.
GACL has expressed concern over the growing number of illegal constructions around Wa Airport. The eastern corridor for landing is now under threat, with every flight subjected to elevated risk levels due to encroachment. Recently, airport authorities demolished a hazardous structure to prevent a potential aviation disaster.
The issue is exacerbated by zinc-roofed buildings in the area, which can blind pilots during their approach. The western landing direction of the airport is already unusable due to obstructions. GACL is committed to safeguarding the airport and ensuring the safety of all air operations in the region.
To tackle this pressing issue, GACL plans to intensify public education for chiefs and residents of Wa. The company urges residents to stop building around the airport to ensure safety and prevent a looming aviation crisis. Authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to building regulations to maintain aviation safety in the region.
