Wales launches UK-first authority to tackle unsafe abandoned coal tips

The Welsh Government has announced the establishment of a new public body, the Disused Mine and Quarry Tips Authority, to address safety concerns related to abandoned coal tips across Wales. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies has stressed the critical importance of this new authority, with over 90% of at-risk news located in the south Wales valleys.

The Authority will be responsible for assessing, categorising, registering, and inspecting all disused tips in Wales, making it the first of its kind in the UK. First Minister Eluned Morgan welcomed the news, stating that it will make a real difference to communities in the affected areas. Until the Authority is established, the Welsh Government will continue to work closely with public partners to ensure effective inspection and maintenance of these sites.

The Authority's headquarters will be based at the Welsh Government office at Rhyd Y Car in Merthyr Tydfil, bringing 60 new jobs to the area and ensuring the Authority is located where it's needed most. The Welsh Government is also exploring opportunities in apprenticeships and post-16 education to create a skills pipeline for jobs in coal tip safety.

The Disused Mine and Quarry Tips Authority is set to improve public safety and provide new job opportunities in the region. The Welsh Government's commitment to addressing the legacy of Wales's mining past is clear, with the new body expected to make a significant impact on communities affected by abandoned coal tips.
