Walked to School Through Meter-Tall Snowdrifts: Kyrgyzstan's President Met the Boy Who Became a Viral Hit
A young Kyrgyz boy who walked miles through deep snow to reach school has been honoured by the country’s president. Sadyr Japarov met with 10-year-old Nurzaman Almazbekov after his determination went viral earlier this year. The fourth-grader’s journey through harsh winter conditions captured national attention.
Nurzaman’s story began in early 2025 when images of him trekking through snowstorms in Arpa village spread online. His teacher, Gulnura Alymbekova, highlighted his unwavering commitment to education despite the difficult weather. The boy’s persistence soon reached the highest levels of government.
President Japarov invited Nurzaman to the presidential New Year’s celebration as a special guest. During their meeting, the leader praised the child’s dedication and handed him personal gifts. In a gesture of ongoing support, Japarov also shared his private phone number with the young student.
The meeting marked official recognition of Nurzaman’s efforts to attend school despite extreme conditions. The president’s actions signalled encouragement for students facing similar challenges across Kyrgyzstan. The boy’s story has now become a symbol of resilience in the country.
