Walmart names John Furner as new US CEO after Doug McMillon’s decade-long leadership
Walmart has announced that John Furner will succeed Doug McMillon as CEO of Walmart US, effective February 1, 2026. McMillon, who has led the company for over a decade, will retire on January 31, 2026. Furner, currently the CEO and president of Walmart's US operations, brings over 30 years of experience at the company.
Furner began his career at Walmart in 1993 as an hourly associate and has since risen through the ranks. He has served as the CEO and President of Walmart US since 2019, overseeing the company's growth and transformation under McMillon's leadership.
McMillon, who started as a store associate in 1984, has been instrumental in Walmart's evolution. He oversaw the company's transition into a major ecommerce competitor, attracting a wide range of customers, including households earning more than $100,000 a year. Under his tenure, Walmart's stock has grown by 300%.
Furner will take the helm of Walmart US on February 1, 2026, with McMillon remaining on the board and serving as an advisor during the transition. The company looks forward to continued growth and innovation under Furner's leadership.
