Warendorf's €15 motorhome fee sparks backlash from loyal campers

Warendorf will introduce a €15 daily charge for motorhome pitches this spring. The city council approved the fee last autumn, sparking mixed reactions from campers. Some regular visitors have already vowed to stay away.

The decision came in autumn 2023, with the council voting unanimously in favour. The CDU argued that private camping operators faced unfair competition from the city's lower-priced pitches. Now, the new fee brings municipal rates in line with commercial providers.

The city insists the price is justified. Officials point to the site's central location and available facilities as reasons for the increase. They also note that a cheaper alternative exists nearby for those unwilling to pay the higher rate. Not everyone agrees. Günter Brossat, an 83-year-old who frequently camps in Warendorf, called the fee excessive. Other visitors have expressed frustration, with some claiming they will no longer return. The city has additional plans for the site. Outdated power supply columns will be replaced, and parking meters are set to arrive in April. These upgrades aim to improve the experience for those who continue to use the pitches.

The new charge takes effect this spring, bringing the city's pricing closer to private operators. While some campers have criticised the cost, the council maintains the fee reflects the site's quality. Upgrades to infrastructure are also underway, though it remains unclear how many visitors will return under the new system.
