"We need a strong city council": Martin Fortmaier wants to remain mayor

Eglfing’s mayoral election in March 2026 looks set to be uncontested, with only one candidate in the running. Incumbent mayor Martin Fortmaier secured his nomination with strong support, while the local council race features eighteen hopefuls vying for twelve seats. Voters will also face a single-party ballot, simplifying their choices this time around.

Martin Fortmaier, the current mayor, was officially nominated for re-election with 57 votes in his favour. His plans for the next term include building a new community centre, expanding the district heating network, and improving services for elderly residents.

For the council election, eighteen candidates are competing for twelve positions. Seven of the existing councillors are seeking another term, while others, like Andreas Ertl, have stepped aside. Ertl withdrew his name to allow younger candidates a chance to run. Before the secret ballot, each candidate briefly introduced themselves to voters. The election rules permitted up to twelve votes per person, with no more than three cast for any single individual. The election supervisor acknowledged the candidates’ willingness to take on additional responsibilities for the village. Unlike previous years, voters will likely find just one list on their ballots. This streamlined approach contrasts with past elections, where multiple slates often appeared.

Fortmaier’s unopposed mayoral bid and the single-party council ballot suggest a straightforward election process in Eglfing. The new term will focus on infrastructure projects and senior care, while the council welcomes a mix of returning and fresh faces. The results will determine who leads these initiatives from March 2026 onward.
