Berliners are stepping up to support those in need this Christmas. From food donations to crisis hotlines, volunteers across the city are working to help the homeless, lonely seniors, and struggling families. The efforts come as Mayor Kai Wegner shared festive greetings and praised the community’s solidarity during the holiday season.

Food charity Berliner Tafel is running its annual winter campaign from December 15 to January 2. Volunteers will collect surplus food from supermarkets and distribute it through their LAIB und SEELE outlets. The initiative aims to ensure no one goes hungry over the holidays.

Meanwhile, Silbernetz is operating its Feiertagstelefon (0800 4 70 80 90) from December 24 to New Year’s. A team of 65 volunteers and staff will offer support to lonely seniors who need someone to talk to during the festive period.

Another key effort is Samaritan’s Purse, where 3,500 volunteers have been packing Weihnachten im Schuhkarton gift boxes for disadvantaged children. The project wrapped up on December 13, ensuring thousands of youngsters receive presents this Christmas.

In a social media post, Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner thanked volunteers for their dedication. He also acknowledged police officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, and public transport workers for keeping the city running smoothly. Wegner wished everyone a restful and peaceful holiday, highlighting the unity among Berliners during the season.

The combined efforts of charities and volunteers are making a difference for vulnerable groups in Berlin. With food aid, emotional support, and gift donations, the city’s solidarity is visible across different initiatives. Wegner’s message underscored the importance of community spirit during Christmas.
